Does the lavender scent fade?

What Is a Yoga Bolster and What Is It Used For?

A yoga bolster is an elongated, firm yoga cushion that supports your body in restful postures and helps you sink deeper into relaxation. Unlike a traditional meditation cushion, a bolster is specifically designed for reclined and supported positions.

A yoga bolster is most commonly used for:

Yin Yoga & Restorative Yoga — as support under your back, knees or chest, allowing you to hold postures for minutes without muscle tension. Your body can fully let go.

Backbends & Chest Openers — placed lengthwise under the spine, the bolster gently opens the chest and shoulders. Also ideal for breathing exercises (Pranayama).

Pregnancy — relieves pressure on the pelvis and lower back in side-lying positions. The weight of the bolster provides an additional calming, grounding sensation.

Knee Relief — placed under the knees in Shavasana, the bolster takes tension off the lower back. Especially beneficial for those with a sway back.

Yoga Bolster Filling: Spelt Husks, Kapok or Buckwheat?

The filling determines how your yoga bolster feels — and each material has its strengths.

Spelt husks conform to your body shape while providing stable support. A spelt-filled bolster is heavier (ours weighs 4.5 kg), which many find pleasantly grounding — similar to a weighted blanket. Ideal if you mainly use your bolster at home.

Kapok is a plant-based natural fibre, much lighter than spelt (approx. 2 kg). A kapok bolster is easier to carry but adapts less to the body and feels firmer. Good if you regularly take your bolster to a studio.

Buckwheat hulls sit between spelt and kapok — mouldable and medium weight. However, buckwheat can rustle slightly with movement.

Our bolster is filled with organic spelt husks from a German grain mill, complemented by optional organic lavender flowers from Provence. The combination of weight, adaptability and subtle lavender scent is unique — no other yoga bolster on the market offers this.

Buying a Yoga Bolster — What to Look For

Size: Most yoga bolsters are 60–65 cm long and 20–22 cm wide. Ours measures 63 × 25 cm — deliberately wider, offering more surface area. Especially supportive for taller people or when using the bolster for backbends.

Weight: Lighter bolsters (1.5–2 kg with kapok) are practical to transport. Heavier bolsters (4–5 kg with spelt husks) provide more support and a calming, grounding weight. Which is better depends on whether you use your bolster at home or in a studio.

Cover: Look for a removable, washable cover. Ours is made from untreated organic cotton (350 GSM) — no dyeing, no chemicals, never exposed to pesticides. The long side zip makes removal easy.

Production: Many bolsters are mass-produced in Asia. We fill each bolster by hand in Wiesbaden, Germany — every single one. The covers come from a small family workshop in India, produced fairly and transparently.

FAQ

What's the difference between a yoga bolster and a yoga roll?

They're the same thing — "Yogarolle" is the German term for a cylindrical yoga bolster. Don't confuse it with a foam roller (which is hard and used for massage). Our yoga bolster is soft, supportive and designed for relaxation — not rolling out muscles.

Which yoga bolster for beginners?

As a beginner, a medium to large bolster with spelt husk filling is a great choice. It provides stable support, moulds to your body, and requires no experience — simply place it, lie on it, let go.

What exercises can you do with a yoga bolster?

The classics: supported backbend (bolster lengthwise under the spine), supported child's pose (rest your upper body on the bolster), butterfly (bolster under your back in Supta Baddha Konasana), side-lying (bolster between the knees), and Shavasana (bolster under the knees for lower back relief).

Can your yoga bolster also be used as a meditation cushion?

Yes — you can sit on the bolster in a kneeling or cross-legged position. Its length offers a different seating surface than a round meditation cushion, which some find more comfortable. If meditation is your primary focus, also take a look at our round meditation cushion.

Round or rectangular yoga bolster?

Round bolsters (like ours) are more versatile — suitable for backbends, knee support and sitting. Rectangular bolsters have a flatter surface and tip less, but offer less depth for backbends. For Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga, most yoga teachers recommend a round bolster.
