The Profound History of Meditation: Tracing its Origins Through Time

To understand the history of meditation, we must journey back through time. The roots of meditation’s history reach deep, preceding even the most ancient of world religions. Archaeological findings indicate that meditation-like practices existed as far back as 5,000 to 3,500 BCE in the Indus Valley.

When looking at meditation from the sphere of yoga, one of the first written sources describing meditation is "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali" from around 400-100 BCE. The sutras include a collection of principles and theory of yoga which outline the eight limbs of yoga (ashtanga), of which the seventh limb is Dhyana, Meditation.

Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to the question of ‘who invented meditation’ due to its far-reaching history. Nevertheless...

Who Introduced and Popularised Meditation Practices?

While meditation has ancient roots, it gained depth and popularity through influential figures in diverse cultures. Notably, "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali," composed between 400-100 BCE, delineate meditation as one of the eight limbs of yoga. These sutras laid the groundwork for integrating meditation into practices like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and more. Meditation gained international prominence in the 1960s when the Beatles visited India to study Transcendental Meditation.

How do I learn how to meditate?

In my own exploration of meditation when I was traveling India, I wrote a book about the subject. Looking for an introduction which was both curious but also realistic, I was not able to find anything that collated information about meditation in a short and precise format. My book dives deep into the art and science of meditation, making it accessible to beginners. It serves as a guide if you want to learn how to meditate, providing insights and practical techniques to enhance your meditation journey. From understanding meditation's history to mastering mindfulness, this book equips you with the tools to navigate the world of meditation confidently.

Now as you embark on your meditation journey, remember to check out my book "Calm Your Mind: The Art and Science of Meditation - A Beginner's Guide."

If you are looking for a book to read to get a full introductory picture which helps you to navigate the transformative world of meditation, unlock a healthier, more centered and more peaceful you, then this is the book on meditation for you.

So, why meditate? The answer is: for your own holistic well-being and a brighter, more mindful and calm future.
